One of the world’s more pressing problems involves treating maintaining, and conserving our water resources. While energy and environment (CO2 concern) have recently taken top billing, water has been declared the “ oil of this century” by Fortune magazine in 2000. Our goal of developing new materials that can be used for a variety of water treatment applications definitively pushing CDI technology forward.

CDI for water softening. The major contaminants in most water softening applications are CaCl2, MgCl2, CaCO3, and MgCO3 can be removed from water fast and easy using our CDI three electrode technology.

Removal of ions for water treatment. In order for CDI materials to be used in a complete water treatment system, it must show that the system can remove ions having a wide variety of valent states and hydrated radii. Results investigating NaCl, MnCl2, FeCl2, and FeCl3 clearly show how flexible CDI technology is in capturing a wide array of ions, therefore being effective as a water treatment system.

Removal of organics and pathogens. Basically, anything electrically charged can be separated from water using our CDI technology, this is also the case or organics or bacteria.

Desalinization. Our three electrode CDI technology shines removing NaCl and other salts, therefore we are investigating CDI potential for small scale desalinization processes.

Other potential applications for our CDI technology are being explored with promising results including deionization processes for the semiconducting industry, food industrial processes, water treatment for military or humanitarian scenarios, etc.
